I had to buy some bread milk and butter.
Thought I might pick up a six pack of Heineken too
as a treat for myself while watching TV later.

Outside It poured with rain and a gale howled.
The wind blew the cold spray into my face and I pulled my
coat tightly about me. I opened the super strong golf umbrella
as another defence against the elements. I left my apartment,
turned right out the gate and headed up to the local convenience
store 10 minutes walk up the road.

Over Islandbridge I strolled looking into the water as I went,
seeing the ducks and the swans below struggling against the wind
as they searched for food. The gale tried to steal my super strong
golf umbrella but I valiantly held on.

As I got to the top of the road I faced the first of three junctions.
It was the busiest with three lanes of speeding traffic heading into
the centre of Dublin city and then upon reaching the central strip
I faced three more fast lanes going the other way towards my
home town of Ballyfermot.

Successfully negotiated I tackled the next junction at the crossroads of
the famous Kilmainham jail, where the 1916 rebel Irish leaders were
executed by the occupying British forces and on the other side was
the Royal Hospital. Once a military hospital but now the museum of
modern art. The rain battered me and the wind turned me but I
valiantly carried on.

The final junction, Kilmainham crossroads and Mount Brown was just as
busy as the other two and once again halted my progress. The wind led me
on a merry dance across the road as it turned me this way and that and my
umbrella swooped up and down crazily.

I finally made it to the Spar shop and purchased my groceries.
Looking like something dragged out of a pond, I searched my
pockets for the correct money, paid and left.

Outside the automatic glass doors I once again put up my
super strong umbrella and this time it was captured by the gale.
The fabric ripped and was torn away by the force of natures elements.
I was left holding above me the metal skeleton of what once had been
a proud defence against the rain as the water poured down and pasted
my hair to my head.

Two teenage girls laughed at me as I was holding a ripped plastic bag
in one hand and what used to be an umbrella in the other. I abandoned the
metal skeleton, pulled my coat tightly about me again and set off home.

As I came to the edge of the footpath, I faced the first of three junctions.
